  • Pillar of Fire

    Pillar of Fire

This painting had a couple of iterations. It was going to have a pair called “Pillar of Smoke” referencing the guides that God provided leading Israel out of Egypt. However, time and efforts lead me into other areas of painting. This painting also got damaged and was reframed on a slightly shorted frame to allow for it’s sale.

Murderers Bay; First European Contact with Aotearoa

  • Kotuku; Three generations over-turned by the storm

Kotuku; Three generations over-turned by the storm

Following a tragedy in the South Island where a grandfather, father, and son from the same family died in a boating accident during a storm in the Foveaux Strait. The boat’s name was Kotuku, which is also the Māori name for the white heron. Turner regularly documented boats, storms and disasters in his work, and so it felt poignant to create this painting.

  • This is the day that Rome was built

This is the day that Rome was built

My love for Italy only expanded after visiting Rome. Seeing the city and travelling the sites, it was phenominal. Experiencing the art and culture of the whole area was mind blowing. In particular, seeing church steps that were worn down from the millions of feet that had used them, doors that were older than the European history of our country. The Colosseum left a lasting impression on me, and using the photos I took and memories I had, created this work.

  • The Hill of Tamatea; The Land Eater

The Hill of Tamatea; The Land Eater

Situated in the Hawkes Bay just outside of Porangahau, The Hill of Tamatea; The Land Eater was originally painted from situe and then completed at home. The reason for choosing this piece is largely due to the location having the longest name in the world. In Te Reo Māori, the name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, and translates literally to “the summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one.

  • Setting Sail to the Setting Sun; The End of the First Voyage to Aotearoa

Setting Sail to the Setting Sun; The End of the First Voyage to Aotearoa

A follow up to the painting of Murderer’s Bay, this depicts Able Tasman leaving the country to return after the incident with the local Māori. Originally painted in acrylic, this painting was reworked in oils to include thicker texture and more vibrant colour.
