My love of New York has been a lifelong fascination and so to continue experimenting with large format pixellation paintings I created two images of the Statue of Liberty. This is the second painting.

Outside Jerusalem

Following my Christian faith, I decided to depict a landscape scene from my imagination of what it might look like outside of Jerusalem.

South of Pencarrow
2003Acrylic on un-stretched calico
W1890 x H430
Sold
Taking a familiar and favourite landscape of the Pencarrow heads, I experimented with creating artwork using a limited colour palette. This dramatically changed how I viewed landscapes, and in particular, creating skies. It was also around here that I began seeing texture and artistic strokes as an incorporated part of the painting.

Storm
2003Acrylic on un-stretched calico
W5700 x H1890
Private Collection
After a year at art school building my confidence in painting large murals on calico, I took to creating a three part work featuring Christ the crucifix. The storm brews overhead and within the clouds a poem about the ultimate sacrifice.

The Gate
2003Acrylic on un-stretched canvas
W1560 x H895
$1640.00 NZD
This work was hugely inspired by the great New Zealand artist, Colin McCahon. It links to the three crosses on the hill; Christ flanked by the two criminals. The term “Gate” is an opening, an access point to further fields, similar to how Christ is a gate to heaven.

This Time Around
2003Acrylic on canvas
W1760 x H1170
Private Collection
This is a sky study based off a photograph I took of a particularly stunning sunset. Working with a range of different tonal studies and layering was a challenge. I am particularly fond of the subtle flare on the hills that somehow makes the white of the setting sun brighter.

75 Years
2004Acrylic on board
W170 x H375

Experimenting on painting on a different material. This one is painted on two boards from a small apple box.

Another Day Dawns
2004Acrylic on canvas
W400 x H600
Sold
A simplified landscape which utilised a copper paint. I was inspired by the topographical maps which use contour lines to identify the mountains and valleys. I decided to use this idea to draw the landscape and it’s details. I have gone on to use this multiple times in my drawings and artworks since.
“Another day dawns, the wind blows across the sea.”

Arrival
2004Acrylic on canvas
W1500 x H320
$1250.00 NZD
I have always loved the idea of panorama, especially long, thin canvases with stretching landscapes. For this one, I also wanted to experiment with the arrangement of both pieces, where it can be displayed next to each other either way around. One makes an island, where both ends can be seen. The other way around makes two peninsulas looking out through the heads.

Christ’s Sake
2004Acrylic on canvas
W610 x H920
$2800.00 NZD
Another crucifixion scene highlighting the robber on the cross next to Christ. Many hand studies and drawings were created in the process of creating this. This is my first attempts at creating a semi realistic or detailed painting.
