Very true. When I think about it, the beginning of a song is very important in terms of setting the pace. If you get it wrong at the top, it's hard to reign it in later on down the track. Its also important that the drummer sets the beat and keeps it steady throughout. Thanks for your comments.

This is a great post. I completely agree with you. I love that song you mentioned, and it sounds great when played right. Over the past year or so at our church we've started using in-ear monitors and a click to keep the speed. Makes a huge difference although I must say I dislike the click in my ear all the time. I try to get he click volume quite lower that I can use it if I'm starting a song, but prefer to let the drummer keep time after that.
Keep sharing your thoughts!

Yup. Line it up so that the base overlaps or at least lines up with the edges ALL around the mandolin. You don't want any gaps. If you look down from on top of the mandolin, you should be able to see the base sticking out all around the mandolin.
I used a staple that I punched in and then cut the middle out of, so the two pins stuck up, and pressed that up into the base - which created two guide holes for the positioning of the base when it came time to glue.
When you're lining it up, make sure you get the centre line of the base lined up both at the neck and at the tail. Once it's all glued and dried, use a small hacksaw to trim away the excess, and then a Dremel to tidy it up and make it match.
Good luck!

Hi Al, I was getting everything ready for my build earlier today and noticed that the back is quite a bit larger than the body/top component. I guess I need to line it up as you mentioned above in #8 and then shave the excess so it fits the body curves? I can see in #9 that the base of yours overlapped as well.

Absolutely. Get your space sorted out and make sure you have everything you need before you start. There is a lot of glue drying times, so working in the evenings is quite good because then you can leave it to dry over night. The antique look was quite easy to produce if you get the rub on stain, and then before it dries use some spit and elbow grease to "stress" the stain and rub it out so the natural wood shines through.

I can't wait to get started on mine, unfortunately I am not a very "detail-oriented" person so I am making sure I have everything I need and a space all set aside to build this so when I begin I will not shortcut things. A week seems pretty fast!! I love the stain job you did, I am thinking of giving mine an "antique" look as well. How about posting something on YouTube so we can see how it sounds, I'll bet it sounds great! Happy playing, I can't wait to get mine done.

Having never played any other mandolin it's a bit hard to say whether it plays well. It stays in tune, and once I lowered the action a little bit more, it's quite easy to play.
It was meant to be a weekend project, that I worked on in the weekends for a few months, but as it turned out, it was during the school holidays, (I'm a teacher) and so I actually got it all done within a week! Arrived on Monday, finished it by Sunday!

Hi Al: I have this kit and have been looking for just what you provided. One question, how long did it take you to build this? Your mandolin looks very nice, how does it play?
